Why The Opening Tip Is A Betting Market
Most bettors ignore the opening tip. Books don't. Multiple sportsbooks offer "opening tip winner" as a prop on every WNBA game, and the lines are often set close to 50/50 -- even when one team wins the tip significantly more often than that. If a team wins the tip 65% of their home games and the book is pricing them at -110, that's an edge.

The Tip tab on this page tracks each team's overall tip win percentage, their home rate, their away rate, and two critical follow-up stats: how often the team that won the tip also scored first, and how often they scored first after losing the tip. That second stat tells you which teams are aggressive regardless of possession.
First Basket Props -- The Most Under-researched Bet In Basketball
First basket props are available on every WNBA game at most books. The odds on individual players range frm +200 to +1500 depending on their role and name recognition. The books set these based on scoring average and matchup -- but scoring average doesn't tell you who starts hot, who the team goes to in the opening possession, or who has been the designated first-action player on their team's first play design.

The First Basket tab shows which players have scored the first basket of the game, how many times this season, their percentage of all team games, their percentage of games where their team scored the first basket specifically, and home/away splits. Use this before placing first basket props -- filter by player name or team abbreviation with the search box.
How To Read The Tip Tab Numbers
The Tip tab shows one row per team. Tip Win% is the overall percentage across home and away. Home% and Away% break that down -- some teams have a significant home court advantage in the tip circle. Won Tip -> Scored 1st is the follow-through rate: when they win the tip, how often do they parlay that into scoring the first basket. Lost Tip -> Scored 1st is the resilience stat: how often do they answer back and score first even without first possession.

High Lost-Tip -> Scored 1st rates belong to teams with aggressive offense that doesn't rely on possession advantage. Those teams are interesting for first basket props on their featured scorers even when they're tipping off on the road.
